| Jasmine, The Seafood Restaurant of San Diego |

Jasmine is a huge restaurant in Clairemont Mesa. The cuisine is Cantonese. Lunch is primarly dim sum, although servers also bring around main courses and diners can order off the menu.
The dinner menu is quite extensive with the emphasis on seafood. On weekends, it is best to call ahead as Jasmine is quite often used for wedding parties which closes the restaurant to the general public.

Jasmine is one of the most popular restaurants among the county's Asian population. With an emphasis on seafood, it bucks the trend of northern Chinese cuisines and serves exclusively Cantonese dishes.
The main attraction for lunch is the dim sum. The dim sum is prepared quite well, but the selection is not quite as extensive as other, nearby dim sum houses. However, servers do come by with main course specials which are quite well prepared. Expect to wait for up to 30 minutes to get a seat during the height of the lunch hour.
Dinner is off a very extensive menu. Favorites among diners are the abalone, duck, shark fin, and lobster dishes. The beef dishes are perhaps better left for other restaurants and almost seem an afterthought to the menu. Although this is a huge restaurant, reservations for weekend dinner are recommended for both a table and to make sure the restaurant is open to the public that particualr night.
Service is the main weak point with the restaurant. In a word, it is slow. Waiting for over 15 minutes just to get a credit card run is not uncommon, and getting drinks during lunch can be an adventure in itself.
Sticking with the seafood is the best bet at Jasmine. I've taken visitors from both China and Taiwan there, and all give the seafood a hearty recommendation. |
