No foo-foo food, snooty maitre d's or stiff waiters here! Jun 17th, 2004
Stepping up to and through the front door of Casamento's is like stepping back in time 50 or 60 years. What else would you expect in a restaurant that has been in the same location and run by the same family since 1919. The white tile floor walls and ceilings with green accents gives Casamento's a very clean feeling without starkness. Seating is divided into front and rear areas along side either wall. We sat in the rear "no smoking" area, which afforded us a view into the small kitchen.

We began with a bowl of gumbo. AHHH! THE GUMBO!! Undoubtedly the best bowl of gumbo I've experienced in New Orleans or anywhere else. The roux had that difficult to obtain nutty, toasted flavor without a hint of burnt taste, with plenty of shrimp and other goodies. This place is worth going to for nothing but the gumbo! I'm pretty much a fried seafood guy, so we had fried shrimp, oysters, crab fingers, and gulf trout (Seafood Platter). All were very fresh, cooked just right, and well drained (overcooked, greasy seafood is a pet peeve of mine…). The french fries were also cooked to my liking, well drained and tasty (due no doubt to the use of LARD in the deep fryer).

No fancy plates, silverware or linens; no foo-foo food, snooty maitre d's or stiff waiters! It's like going to your aunt's for dinner (not your mama's or gramma's if you know what I mean). Food was served fresh and hot, the beer was cold (my favorite - Abita Amber). Everything was VERY CLEAN!! Our server (a family member?? reminding me of someone's aunt) was rather impersonal until I asked her about the history of the restaurant. She promptly slid a chair over, sat down and gave us a most interesting history of the family, the restaurant and some of the characters who used to come in. This is something you just don't get anymore!

It was just a tad pricey for the neighborhood, ambience and service, but the food was good (again, the gumbo was GREAT!!), and served without pretense. This is one of those places where you go in, sit down, eat and enjoy, then go on your way.

To get to Casamento's, your bet is to get a cab. Parking is streetside (there were no parking spaces anywhere in site when we arrived at 5:30pm), the neighborhood is busy, and driving anywhere in New Orleans (especially on Friday evening!) is P-I-A.

No reservations are accepted and the place is small, so come early or expect to stand outside and watch the pick-up basketball game across the street. Otherwise, there is a bar on one side and a Mardi Gras costume shop on the other, either of which will serve to expand your cultural awareness of the Big Easy.

Call before you go. I believe they close during the summer months.

Recommended? You bet!
