Local friends recommend Mahi Mah's as "the" place to go for seafood. So, my family and I decided to have lunch before spending the afternoon at the beach. We were casually dressed, had a jogging stroller, and a beach bag.
We walked into the main entrance around noon on a Saturday and found the restaurant about 70% empty. In spite of occupying the entire front entrance we were made to feel invisible. Several of the employees made eye contact with us but did not bother to say hi. After about 3 minutes, a waitress walked by us and I asked her how we could get a table. She simple pointed to the middle of restaurant and said that the hostess was over there. We moved to the middle of the restaurant and waited a few more minutes without being acknowledged by anyone. So, I decide to take matters into my own hands. The outdoors part of the restaurant had several tables available and I decided to sit us there. As we attempted to have a sit, the area waitress told us that we had to wait (1) to be seated and (2) for a table to be available. I explained than no one had greeted us and showed her that more than 70% of the tables were unoccupied. She did not apologize on behalf of the restaurant and asked us to wait while she checked. While this was happening my husband was given one of those vibrating pages by the hostess - that made no sense, the restaurant was practically empty.
Soon after, the area server returned and told us that the restaurant would make an exception and allow us to sit without waiting. Then she told us that we had to place the stroller in the office not to obstruct the walkway. I pointed out that the table next to us had a motorized chair next to them and that it was obstructing the way. She looked at it and let us leave our stroller there. By that point, we had felt insulted many times. If we did not have a hungry toddler that was starting to get cranky, we would have left.
The waitress that was assigned to us was very polity. The food was just OK. My husband's fish of the day was a little too spicy and my crab cake was average at best.
To make it worse, the restaurant manager walked by our table several times asking about their experience but never bothered to ask us.
In all, the poor customer service made the experience horrible and gave our one day trip to Virginia Beach a deplorable start.
Shame on you Mahi Mah's! A great dinning experience consists of great food and outstanding service. I have received better service when buying happy meals at McDonalds. |

If you're looking for an excellent view and exceptional food, you've got to try this expansive restaurant. You can try multi-national foods ranging from Japanese Sushi to Italian Pasta to down home cooking or even just clams and oysters from the raw bar during happy hour. Drink specials during happy hour will keep you coming back...try the crab soup too.
Extensive wine selections are very reasonable if you plan a more elegant evening...there is a more formal dining room off from the bar area for those special occassions. Service is always friendly and prompt...take advantage of their valet parking...very convenient.
Have a great time and enjoy a free concert outside in the mean time. |
